The first article linked in this one about this woman's first brush with the media (when she let her 9 year old on the subway alone) is even less objectionable to me. It's not like she dropped him off in an unfamiliar part of the Bronx and said good luck. Being in NYC schools all semester, I've seen NYC kids who spend an hour commuting to and from school every day, and they're perfectly fine. Some parents accompany them, and some don't (Actually, I've seen more parents accompanying their kids to schools in nice neighborhoods than in bad neighborhoods.) Maybe leaving the kids unattended at a park is a problem for different reasons. I guess I could see an issue with a kid getting hurt and no adults around to help, but kids are really more capable of handling themselves (to a point) than people think sometimes.
